Hello, My Name Is Heather…and I’m a Book-a-holic.
I don’t mean to poke fun at AA, but in this case, it’s true.
Have you seen that meme about finishing a book and coming out into the real world like you’ve been in hiding for days? Squinty eyes, an altered perception of reality..
..All because your head has been buried in a book?
I used to be that way with fiction books. I love me some Twilight series 😉
But over the last couple of years, I have really gotten into self-development, business, and more thoughtful books. Recently expanding into health and thought. It’s fascinating!
I wanted to tell you a story about a random Monday last week.
My BFF and I decided it would be a good day to hit up our local bookstore. 10,000 titles, the side of the building boasted.
He had ventured in a few weeks before, but I hadn’t been in there for years. He fell in love with a few books he found on the first trip and was itching to get back! I love a good book hunt, so we buzzed over!
Two hours…TWO HOURS…later, on a MONDAY afternoon, we decided we better stop looking! LOL
We could have stayed another two hours! We found SO many good finds. You could hear us OOOOing and AHHHing all over the store, I think.
Best part was, the week before, we’d hit the jackpot at the Goodwill 50% off sale and snagged TONS of books on the cheap. It’s amazing what gems people get rid of! So now, we had stacks of books at our homes to still dig into, and we had TONS of books in our hands at the bookstore this day.
I got off track there…got excited about my book stacks! 😉
Anyway, we decided we’d better stop while we were on the low end of our wallets 😉 He had 15-20 books. I had found 12. I had a big stack of books, and then happened upon 10 of my FAVORITE author’s books, so I made some switches with books I wasn’t in LOVE with and opted for the Norman Vincent Peale collection. I’m sure my face lit up when I saw them all lined up there!
We stacked all of our books on the counter to check out, and would you believe…even though he had 20 of his own books, he wanted to cover (no pun intended) mine too. Of course, I protested….
And then said something that felt so good to hear, “I want to. It’s investing in you.”.
Not, I wanna buy these because I can or because you want them or because you don’t need to spend the money or because I like you (though those were decent reasons!)….
…”Investing in you”.
To me that translates, believing in you.
Me? Believing in me and my abilities to do whatever I want with my life?
See, I already (because of reading!) have a positive outlook on life. I know that if I think I can, I can (sometimes…I’m still working on believing that EVERY day 😉 ).
But it’s a completely different feeling, to have someone else express that they believe in me too.
So, on a random Monday…12 books and 2 hours later…I got, not just free books, but encouragement from my very best friend.
I had to come home and rearrange my house to organize a place for all of the new books I’d collected over the week. It’s inspirational just looking at my shelf and having all of these great titles to choose from.
Filling my head with peace, positivity, creativity, ideas, thoughts, mindfulness, motivation, inspiration. I can’t think of a better way to live life than with a shelf and a brain full of knowledge.
Just a quick little story to say, that I’m realizing two very important things to me…
Knowledge and reading is so powerful to me, I can’t imagine life without it. It’s taken me places, and will continue to, as long as I never stop!
Encouragement means the world to me. I have always been very self-doubting/self-conscious. Having someone who invests in and believes in me, means everything.
Do you stimulate your brain with reading everyday? Do you have people who encourage and believe in you?
I’d encourage you to starting doing/finding both!
Knowledge is power. Relationships are the key to LIFE! 🙂
