This is the Google-owned company’s first app that has been created start-to-finish which has little ones in mind! Hooray for YT thinking FAMILY FRIENDLY! 😀
I know that my kids love the freedom of YouTube because they can “change the channel” whenever they want. Especially my 7 year old since he can read and type. But I won’t lie and say that he hasn’t come across some REALLY uncool stuff for a 7 year old’s eyes to see.
Enter, the YouTube Kids App!
YouTube explained that the app was created to make it easier and safer for kids to find videos they want to see. The app is also a more basic and simplified app (bigger graphics and built-in voice search for those who haven’t learned how to type or even spell yet) compared to the main YouTube platform and app, although it does still feature videos, playlists and channels.
There is also a focus on content areas, like science and math tutorials with a focus on early literacy, though the YouTube kids app isn’t exactly labeled as an educational tool. The parental controls include a tool to control watch time (even if the content is kid-friendly, we probably shouldn’t let them watch it all the livelong day 😉 ), it also has options to turn off certain sounds and the search option (allowing the child to view only hand selected videos which are housed on the home screen).
If the search option is off, the way to find videos is to surf the playlists and channels which are in four categories: Learning, Shows, Music, and Explore. YouTube promises videos from Jim Henson TV, Mother Goose Club, DreamWorks TV, Talking Tom and Friends, Thomas the Tank Engine. National Geographic Kids, and Reading Rainbow.
In short, the YouTube Kids app will allow children to have the same techie freedom, but it will be so much safer for them to do so!
I call that a win for the parents AND the kids!
Will you download and give the new YouTube Kids App a try?
I’ve already downloaded it to my kids’ tablet. I haven’t told them yet <snicker>. I’m kinda playin’ the mom trick and waiting to see how long it takes them to realize and try out the new app 😉
But in my quick overview of it, it looks to be all that YT says it is. I can’t really imagine any Google-owned company coming out with a product that’s not all it’s cracked up to be! So I’m excited to replace our original app on the kids tablet in favor of the new YouTube Kids App! 😀
